The Shop of the Bookdealer Pieter Meijer Warnars on the Vijgendam in Amsterdam, by Johannes Jelgerhuis (1820)
Amsterdam’s cultural elite met up in this book and print shop. Warnars, the owner, was a bookdealer, publisher and printer. These activities are reflected in the full bookcases, the hanging banner, the packages of printed matter and the printing press on the floor. The painter of this scene was also a noted actor. The pronounced perspective of this shop makes it look like a stage set with a city view as a backdrop.
